Rotational Molding and Injection Molding Processes for PE Gas Pipes

PE gas pipes are widely used in modern life and find applications across a broad range of industries. However, many people may not be fully familiar with the product knowledge related to this material. Let’s take a brief look at the rotomolding and injection molding processes used to manufacture PE gas pipes:

Rotational molding and injection molding of PE gas pipes both employ this processing method, in which the material is typically crushed into powder form, allowing it to melt and flow during thermal cycling.

Comparative wear-resistance tests between large-diameter PE pipes and steel pipes show that HDPE pipes exhibit four times the wear resistance of steel pipes. In slurry transportation applications, HDPE pipes outperform steel pipes in wear resistance, which translates into longer service life and greater cost-effectiveness.

Rotational molding employs two types of polyethylene: general-purpose and crosslinkable grades. Products made from these resins exhibit high impact resistance and minimal warpage, with a typical melt index range of 3 to 8. Higher MI grades are generally not suitable, as they fail to deliver the desired impact performance and resistance to environmental stress cracking in rotational-molded articles. HDPE has countless applications, ranging from reusable thin-walled beverage cups to 5-gallon drums, accounting for one-fifth of domestically produced HDPE. Injection-molding grades typically have a melt index of 5 to 10, with some offering lower toughness and reduced flowability, while others provide higher flowability for improved processability.

The preceding section has provided an overview of the rotomolding and injection molding processes used for PE gas pipes. When using any product, it is essential to base operations on a thorough understanding of its technical characteristics and application requirements, so as to avoid encountering problems during use without knowing how to resolve them. Therefore, both operators and manufacturers must place great emphasis on acquiring in-depth knowledge of a product’s manufacturing processes and technical specifications before putting it into service. Steel-wire-reinforced polyethylene composite pipe is a new type of piping material that uses a high-strength steel wire mesh skeleton—formed by helically winding steel wires in alternating left- and right-hand spirals—as its reinforcing structure, with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) serving as the matrix. A high-performance HDPE-modified adhesive resin is employed to firmly bond the steel wire skeleton to the inner and outer layers of HDPE, creating a robust and durable composite pipe.

PE gas pipes are produced by the polymerization of ethylene monomer. Depending on the polymerization conditions—such as pressure and temperature—the resulting resin can exhibit different densities, giving rise to high-density polyethylene, medium-density polyethylene, and low-density polyethylene. When processing different types of PE pipe products, the appropriate resin grade is selected based on the specific application requirements, and this also dictates varying specifications for the extruder and die. PE drainage pipes, as well as other PE pipes, are widely used in building water supply, building drainage, underground drainage systems, building heating and gas transmission, protective conduits for electrical and telecommunications installations, industrial piping, agricultural irrigation, and more, owing to their unique inherent advantages. Their primary applications include urban water supply, urban gas distribution, and agricultural irrigation.
