With the accelerating pace of urbanization and the ever-growing demands of economic development, China’s oil, natural gas, hydropower, and electric power projects have continued to expand, while simultaneously witnessing significant advancements in construction techniques and project management. In particular, China’s oil and gas pipeline infrastructure has grown substantially in total length and continues to expand, serving as a vital driving force and supporting pillar for the accelerated advancement of industrialization and the sustained high-speed growth of the economy. Given China’s relatively low domestic oil reserves and their uneven distribution, the country has come to rely heavily on imports and on the north-to-south and west-to-east transportation of oil resources, which in turn has made oil and gas pipeline construction a foundational component of China’s industrial development. Horizontal directional drilling is an important trenchless construction technique that is energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective, widely employed in oil and gas pipeline projects. This paper analyzes and discusses the role of horizontal directional drilling in oil and gas pipeline construction, with the aim of providing reference and recommendations for future pipeline construction projects.
