Temporary Emergency Repair of PE Water Supply Pipe Fittings
Over the past few years, the use of PE pipe fittings has steadily increased; at the same time, the incidence of failures has also risen. Based on practical experience, this paper discusses emergency repair techniques for PE plastic water pipes.
Cut off the pipe fitting
Post‑water‑cut repair is an effective method for repairing PE pipes. When a PE pipe leaks, the first step is to shut off the valve and cut out the damaged section. However, due to imperfect valve closure or other special circumstances, the water inside the pipe may not drain completely, leaving the joint surfaces damp. In such cases, the repair can only be carried out using mechanical joints or flanged connections. If the damaged section of the pipe can be kept dry in the absence of water, it can be repaired by one of the following three methods.
1. Mechanical Connection
Insert the stainless steel support sleeve into the pipeline and repair it using water-shutoff-specific PE pipe. Pipe fittings This method is repair. There are two types of internal support sleeves: fixed support sleeves and adjustable support sleeves. A slotted round tube is added near the sealing joint inside the PE pipe fitting for emergency emergency repairs to restore water supply. Its primary function is to restore the pipe’s circularity and prevent axial movement of the pipe. If the degree of non-circularity is small, the repair can be completed using an internal support sleeve and a repair pipe fitting.
2. Flanged Connection
The following small-diameter PE pipes (inclusive) can be repaired using a single set of PE flanges (PE flange fittings and steel flanges). For the aforementioned pipelines, flanged connections may also be used; however, the connection procedure differs from that for small-diameter pipes. First, cut off the fractured pipe section, ensuring that the remaining length is sufficient to accommodate the installation requirements of the flange fittings. After welding the flanges to the existing pipe material, measure the internal distance between the two flange fittings. Following our company’s provided butt-welding procedure, use a pipe segment with the same outer diameter, SDR, and performance as the existing pipe material to connect the other two flange fittings to the rear flange, thereby achieving a matched assembly between the two flange fittings connected to the existing pipe. Once aligned, tighten the bolts to connect the assembly to the existing pipeline, thus forming a fully constrained joint that eliminates the need for internal supports or additional restraining forces.
3. Electrofusion Connection
This repair method is very similar to flange-based repairs; however, it employs a different welding technique to achieve a leak-free connection. Instead of butt-welding the ends of the pipe and flange joint, an electrofusion sleeve is used to join the ends of the replacement pipe to the undamaged pipe. After the water supply is shut off, the electrofusion sleeve is energized to complete the weld. Although this method is relatively expensive, it is commonly used for emergency repairs on gas pipelines.
In practical engineering, there is a growing demand to avoid cutting pipelines during water outage repairs; however, for PE water supply pipes, it is often difficult to carry out repairs without cutting them, resulting in temporary fixes that cannot guarantee long-term performance.
That’s all for today’s episode. Thank you for watching, and see you in the next one!
