Why are PE pipe fittings so popular?

Polyethylene is an inert material. With the exception of a few strong oxidizing agents, it is resistant to corrosion by a wide range of chemicals and does not readily harbor pathogens. It is well known that steel and cast-iron pipes have been replaced by PE pipe fittings not only because PE fittings consume less energy during production and operation, are lighter in weight, offer lower flow resistance, are simple and quick to install, have lower construction costs, boast a longer service life, and provide thermal insulation, but also because… PE pipe fittings It outperforms steel and cast-iron pipes in terms of corrosion resistance and resistance to microbial growth.
Another reason for the widespread adoption and promotion of PE pipe fittings is the growing pressure on PVC to meet environmental protection requirements. First, there are the hygienic and environmental characteristics of PVC itself: it is well known that, when PVC pipes are manufactured under reliable processes and stringent quality control, their hygienic performance can be assured, making them suitable for use in the potable water sector. However, there are concerns that lax regulation in some areas may lead to problems—for example, excessive levels of vinyl chloride monomer in PVC resin or the improper use of harmful additives in formulations for water-supply PVC pipes.
PE pipe fittings The flexibility of a system holds significant technical and economic value. For polyethylene, flexibility is a key property that substantially enhances the material’s utility in pipeline engineering projects. High-quality flexibility enables PE pipe fittings to be coiled and supplied in longer lengths, thereby reducing the need for numerous joints and fittings. Moreover, the combination of flexibility, light weight, and superior scratch resistance makes it possible to adopt a variety of installation methods that minimize environmental impact and social disruption while offering excellent cost-effectiveness, such as trenchless construction techniques. Trenchless construction refers to a range of geotechnical drilling and boring methods used to lay, replace, or rehabilitate underground pipelines without excavating trenches or open cuts.
PE pipe fittings Its unique flexibility also enables it to effectively resist underground movements and end loads. On the surface, PE pipe fittings may appear inferior to cement and metal pipes in terms of strength and stiffness. However, in practical applications, PE pipe fittings are essentially “flexible pipes.” With proper design and installation, they work in concert with the surrounding soil to share the applied loads.
The low-temperature embrittlement point of PE pipe fittings is –70°C, which is superior to that of other piping materials. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) pipes, by contrast, are highly prone to cracking during winter field installation. Experience gained from a pilot project in Beijing, China, involving the underground installation of PVC-U water supply pipelines indicates that subzero temperatures are unsuitable for laying PVC-U pipes. Another compelling piece of evidence is that, to enhance the toughness and low-temperature impact resistance of polypropylene, copolymers of ethylene and propylene can be produced as random copolymer polypropylene (PP-R). This is typically achieved through an iPP process, in which a mixture of propylene and ethylene gases is subjected to copolymerization, yielding a copolymer with an irregular distribution of propylene and ethylene segments along the polymer backbone—i.e., PP-R pipe material. In PP-R pipes, the ethylene content generally hovers around 3%. Nevertheless, even after such improvements, the cold resistance of PP-R remains less than satisfactory, with an embrittlement point of approximately –15°C, which is considerably higher than the –70°C embrittlement point of polyethylene pipes.
