Introduction to the Ground Load Pressure of PE Water Supply Pipes

In the case of PE piping, the tests and verifications typically considered are hydraulic pressure tests for the pipeline, and it is essential to account for all loads acting on underground pipelines. PE water supply pipes are no exception. Let’s take a look together.
A load is an external force and other factors that induce internal forces and cause deformation of a structure or component. Alternatively, in accordance with standard practice, various direct effects are applied to an engineering structure to produce the corresponding structural or component responses. Typical loads include structural self-weight, live floor loads, live roof loads, roof-area surcharge loads, vehicle loads, crane loads, natural environmental loads (such as wind, snow, ice, and wave action), and dynamic loads.
Based on theoretical and design experience, since PE water supply pipes are subject to high-pressure requirements and stringent material specifications, the national standards for this industry do not mandate testing of the ring stiffness of water supply pipelines; however, the ring stiffness of such pipes is required to be higher than that of sewage pipes with the same wall thickness. Consequently, if a water pipeline is subjected to excessive loading, it should be encased in a protective sleeve to safeguard it against undue external forces. If the pipeline is routed beneath sidewalks or other lightly loaded roadways, it will generally remain unaffected. The burial depth, however, must not exceed 0.8 meters, taking into account the frost penetration depth typical in northern regions.
